What to Expect at a Backflow Test

Practical answers for planning field work and understanding the records it produces.

Start with your notice and your water provider.

If your water provider has sent a backflow testing notice, keep it handy. The notice may identify the assembly, deadline, approved tester requirements, and how results must be submitted. These details vary by provider and property. PFS confirms service availability and the applicable testing and documentation requirements before booking.

For businesses and property managers

Send the property address, water provider, testing notice, and any assembly list you maintain. Include the number of devices, their known locations, a site contact, and any access or operating restrictions. If the assembly serves a fire protection line or an occupied facility, tell us who coordinates the affected equipment and any planned interruption. The final test plan should follow your site's requirements and the provider's rules.

For multiple buildings or properties, a single organized device list makes scheduling and recordkeeping easier. PFS can identify each tested assembly in the documentation and help keep the property manager's testing history clear.

For homeowners

Send a photo of your notice and, if possible, a clear photo of the assembly. Tell us whether the device serves irrigation or another connection and where it can be accessed. You do not need to identify the device model from memory; the photo and notice help us confirm what is needed.

During and after the appointment

A certified tester identifies the assembly, confirms safe access and the applicable test procedure, records the readings, and explains the result. Testing an assembly may require a temporary interruption to the connected line; PFS will discuss the site-specific arrangement in advance. PFS handles the applicable testing documentation and submission to the water provider or responsible authority when that responsibility is part of the confirmed scope, and provides a copy for your records.

If an assembly does not pass, you will receive the result and the next testing or retesting steps required by the provider. The documentation should make the outcome clear without implying that a failed test is a completed correction.

Common questions

Is every assembly tested every year? Follow the frequency stated by your water provider and the applicable program. If you received a notice, send it to us so we can confirm the deadline and required form.

Will the water be interrupted? It depends on the assembly and connection. Share the device location and any critical use of the line before scheduling so the visit can be coordinated appropriately.

Who receives the report? PFS confirms the provider's submission process and the report recipient for the appointment. You also receive documentation for your records.
